Chapter 14 Blog 3/18/09

"'I change my mind,' I tell tareq when he comes looking for me. 'I don't want to give them Abba's money.'
'What are you talking about?'
'I can't do it.'" pg. 122-123

I chose this quote because i thought that Nadira made the right choice not to give them the money. i think it was a bad decision to even trust Tareq and the other guys.  But i am glad that she decided not too. This is an important quote because Nadira really thought twice. She thought about her surroundings and what would this do to help her father. She can do something else, just as good, to help her father.

  2. I also think that Nadira made a good choice to abandon Tareq. He seemed "genuinely" helpful at first, but Nadira's Ali-Uncle was right when he told Aisha and Nadira to stay away from Tareq. Nadira should've talked with Aisha and her mom before taking the money.
I thought that it was good that Nadira brought up the confidence when she got the idea to go to Tareq. The idea was risky and bad, but she had the right attitude towards the situation.

  3. I agree. I don't think that giving Tareq the money was a good idea. I think that Nadira was really into the whole self-confindence moment, that she didn't REALLY look at the risks. What do you think?

  4. I agree with everyone (so far...). Nadira didn't really think about it before she decided to give Tareq the money. Also i agree with maddie that nadira should have talked with her family members before she took the $3000. the money wasn't exactly hers, so she didn't really have a right to take it with out permission like she did. even thought it wasn't his responsibility, i don't think that ali-uncle should have given the money to nadira like he did.

finally i thought that the end of this chapter was really scary (at the house with the fat boy watching the simpsons, with the men, and the gun). i wouldn't have had the courage that nadira had to leave. i was proud of her when she did that.

  5. I agree with elana. If you look at my blog I say a lot more in depth, but I also think that it was a good idea for Nadira not to give Tareq the money. Abba worked hard for his money, and Aisha or Nadira would not have been able to go to college.

  6. I agree I was worried Nadira would go through with this plan. Like Maddie said, she was confident and had courage but she needed to think through the plan more. I think Nadira should have thought before taking the money without permission. I was glad that Nadira said no to tareq, but scared for her when she ran blindly out.

  8. I agree with everyone. I think that Nadira made to right decision not to give away $3,000 for a green card that’s not her father's. Even if the names were close, Abba would still have to become someone that he's not. I think that Nadira should also stop contacting Tareq. He's not a good guy. He actually seems kind of dangerous. I hope that Nadira stays safe, and knows what she's doing so that she doesn't get hurt.

I also think that Nadira should have talked with Aisha before taking the money. That money belongs to her whole family. Abba and Ma have been saving that money for a long time, and giving it to someone for a green card that doesn’t even have your name on it doesn’t seem smart to me. Aisha would have probably freaked out that Nadira went off with Tareq and tried to buy a green card under the table for $3,000. Nadira made the right decision not to give her money to the people in the house. She was strong, and I hope she can keep being strong and pull her family together.

  9. I agree with Maddie. I think that it was good that she didn't give them the money. I don't think that she thought it through properly and examined all of the possibilities. She also didn't confront with her family about using the money for that instead. I also don't think that it was the right thing to do by taking the money from Ali-Uncle anyway.

  10. I agree with Anna. I think that Nadira didn't think that she could get hurt in her moment of self-consciousness and she went with Tareq. But, I don't think that she was necessarily strong. I think that she was realizing that what she had done was wrong and in an instant, she tried to redo what she had done.

  11. Responding directly to Karly, I think it is unfortunate that Nadira even considered buying her father illegal documents. She shouldn't have to think twice about a decision so desperate and untrustworthy.

  12. I agree. I thought she made a really good decision not to give Tareq the money. She would've spent all the money Abba worked hard to earn to help Nadira go to college.
I think Tareq is very dangerous and I hope that now Nadira will stay away from him.

I also agree with Anna. I think Nadira should've talked to Aisha before taking out all the money without anyone's permission. She also lied to Ali-Uncle to take the money, which was bad because then she decided not to use the money. If she had given the money to Tareq, Ali-Uncle would've figured out that it wasn't used for Abba's bond.

  13. I am also happy that she had a change of heart, even though it was last minute.

I think the consequences for Nadira if she went through with this would be very extreme. The whole situation could be a scam, and her family could end up penniless. This would result in humiliation (for Nadira) and deportation for the family.
Also this would mean that Aisha wouldn't be able to go to college, and she would probably go into and even deeper depression.

But instantaneously changing the plan was not very bright of Nadira. My prediction is that in the next chapter Nadira will find her way back home but Tareq is going to come for her or money if anything happened with him and the person he was going to talk to.

I believe that Nadira should really talk through her plans with someone else before taking sudden action.

  14. I think that she was really smart to get out of there while she could, because if she had stayed she would have gotten in so deep that she probably would have been found out and punished by either her family or the police, etc. I thought that she was an idiot to go there in the first place, because telling lies isn't going to get you anywhere in the long run. In fact, it is the thing that got them into all this trouble in the first place. I disagree with everyone that said that they think that Nadira should have consulted with someone before she did that. I think she did a good thing by "taking the bull by the horns" and placing matters in her own hands. She took charge of the situation and made the decision she thought was right, even though it turned out it wasn't.

  15. Yeah, I agree with Anna. She shouldn't have given him the money, and luckily she didn't! :)

  16. I think its good that Nadira didn't give Tareq the money. I think that it would of gotten her family in even more trouble.
